Comparison
Air Conditioner and Heat Pump – What's the Difference?
Both systems use the same cycle – but with a different focus.
KI-generiertAir Conditioner
Primarily designed for cooling rooms.
- Main function: Cooling
- Many models can also heat (reversible)
- Ideal for individual rooms or zones
- Quick commissioning
- Lower acquisition costs
Heat Pump
Primarily designed for heating and hot water.
- Main function: Heating & hot water
- Completely replaces oil or gas heating
- Can also be used for cooling (passive/active)
- Higher efficiency at low temperatures
- Government subsidies up to 70%
Similarities
Technically, both systems are based on the same principle: the refrigerant cycle.
- Both use a compressor and refrigerant
- Both can cool and heat
- Both run on electricity
- Modern devices achieve high efficiency values
The line between air conditioners and heat pumps is increasingly blurring.

How Do I Choose the Right System?
Whether AC or heat pump – these three factors help you decide:
Space & Location
Location and insulation matter: Well-insulated buildings often work fine with an AC that heats – older homes benefit more from a heat pump.
Functionality
ACs cool, heat, ventilate, and dehumidify. Heat pumps are more efficient for heating and often eligible for subsidies.
Costs
ACs are cheaper to buy but may cost more to run. Always compare purchase price with operating costs.
Quick Guide: When Is Which Suitable?
- Cooling only → Air conditioner (cheaper, faster to install)
- Heating + cooling → Heat pump with cooling function (e.g. cooling via underfloor heating)
- Heating replacement → Heat pump (use subsidies!)
- Retrofitting individual rooms → Split air conditioner
